This decision comes out of the concern of a flood of refugees into the country as a result of the ongoing civil war in Ethiopia. Kenya is one of many countries that has called for a ceasefire between the Ethiopian government, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and the rebel group Tigray People’s Liberation Front. South Sudan has also shown concerns over the conflict in the region, with worry that it could hurt the country’s domestic issues, such as its just recently concluded civil war.

From my perspective, this is a logical response for Kenya to make. If the recent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan has taught the global community anything, it’s that neighboring countries have to accommodate for massive amounts of refugees if the rebel group wins. South Sudan’s behavior is very logical as well, seeing as the 7 year long civil war in the country has ended so recently. South Sudan could be concerned that if things go south in Ethiopia and the rebels take over, then that could set a precedent for countries in the area.

This relates to international relations with the ideas of Realism, specifically the security dilemma. Kenya reinforcing their borders sends a threatening message to Ethiopia, making their national security go under threat.

Link to article: https://www.dw.com/en/ethiopias-war-triggers-fears-in-kenya-south-sudan/a-59758399 On Monday, November 8, the Kenyan government announced they would be reinforcing security along their border with Ethiopia.
