The recent border closers are because of the new variant of covid-19 that has been found in Southern African countries. The countries that have been announced unavailable to travel to by the UK are South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Ewantini, and Zimbabwe effective immediately. Israel has also done the same but they have included Mozambique as well. These are two of many countries that have the same concern when officials say that the new strand should be worse than the others.

The reason this is important is because these are the first two countries to shut their borders off to sub-saharan countries that contain this new variant. Israel shutting off its borders is most important because they were just offered an observer spot in the African Union. With Israel shutting off its borders to those countries and having an observer spot it will be interesting to see if they will show up to the next African Union meeting. With two major countries shutting off their borders to these countries many more will follow. For example Japan has already started to tighten up their border security to sub-saharan countries and India has started to follow in Japan’s footsteps.

This relates back to the class because it is two states that have shut down their borders because it’s in their national interest to not risk the lives of their citizens to keep their borders open. It now will cause other countries to start worrying about the new variant and will probably cause them to close their borders to the several countries that have shown positive cases of the new variant.

Link: https://allafrica.com/stories/202111260128.html On November 26, 2021 the UK and Israel officially announced that their borders would be closed to all incoming and outgoing travel to any sub-saharan african countries.
