Tedros, a former Ethiopian health minister and foreign minister, said this month that aid was being blocked to Tigray, his home region and the home of rebel forces that have caused anarchy for the state of Ethiopia. Ethiopia claims that Tedros’ morals and professional actions threaten the credibility of the WHO and they claim he has caused a significant weakening of the WHO due to his public comments and social media posts. The WHO has stated that it will continue trying to deliver supplies to the Tigrayan region as Ethiopia has essentially alienated the region due to the violence incurred by the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front (TPLF). The Tigrayan region has been suffering due to the lack of food, aid, and basic necessities, and thousands are dying. The WHO has said that its main priorities are to get access to those in need and for the parties to create security and peace in the state. However, Ethiopia is unsettled by the fact that Tedros was a former TPLF member and his social media presence that ‘encourages’ the TPLF.

Given the past relationship between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF, it’s understandable that the government is wary of a pro-TPLF WHO director. However, the goals of the WHO is to keep people safe and healthy, and the Ethiopian government has failed to protect the Tigrayan people’s basic human rights. The Tigray region has be ostracized from the rest of the country and the only way to create a safe harmonious environment for the entire state is to prevent the ongoing massacres, sexual violence, and famine that is being put onto the people of the Tigray region by the Ethiopian government. The WHO is essential in supporting these people as it represents international interests in the reparation of Ethiopia. However, the Ethiopian government strongly distrusts anyone who is or was a part of the TPLF, so, Tedros, a former member of the Ethiopian government, being in this position of power in an international organization is expected to make the Ethiopian government wary of the entire organization’s priorities and credibility.

The WHO is a part of the UN that is responsible for maintaining and improving global public health. In this scenario, you can see how politics and image are abandoned for the pure necessity of human life because the WHO’s entire goal is to keep people safe. The cutoff of the Tigray region has created a dire situation in which it becomes the WHO’s duty to step in. International organizations are propelled by democratic superpowers that expand their reach and increase their credibility. In this situation, the WHO must step in despite the Ethiopian government’s opposition. The atrocities that are occuring are inflicted by the government itself and it becomes international organizations’ and international superpowers’ duty to step in to protect the people and maintain order in the international system.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/ethiopia-accuses-who-chief-links-rebellious-tigrayan-forces-2022-01-14/ WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has been called to be investigated by Ethiopia’s foreign ministry for having ties to the rebel Tigrayan group that is fighting the Ethiopian government.
