The helicopter was carrying out reconnaissance for the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Congo along with another helicopter when it was attacked. The U.N. peacekeepers on the helicopter were assessing the movements of communities that had been attacked by a rebel group in order to coordinate humanitarian assistance. There was a later a search and rescue mission after the plane crashed, however there were no survivors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is important since eastern Congo is prone to insecurity as several armed groups are searching for control of its mineral-rich lands throughout eastern Congo. Many of these militiamen and rebels are battling for control over natural resources and land in the eastern part of Congo. Democratic Republic of the Congo says that the helicopter that was shot down was specifically by M23 rebel group. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This relates to what we have been talking about in class that organization like the United Nations who are   intergovernmental organization whose purpose is to maintain international peace; it is a war crime violation to shoot or kill individuals of a organizations that are there to try to make peace.
