The soldier went on to kill a humanitarian worker and a fellow soldier. The co-pilot belonged to the Untied Nations Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS). Nigeria is currently battling an islamist insurgency in the region. A Nigerian spokesman stated “Own troops on the ground immediately neutralized the errant personnel,” they added that the co-pilot had been stabilized at a hospital and that investigations were underway. The UNHAS is a humanitarian transport organisation, after the event, the UNHAS stated that, until further notice, all future helicopter missions had been canceled.

This event creates a diplomatic issue. It appears the Nigerian soldier was not acting under orders, rather on their own accord. Nigeria does not support the soldiers actions and quickly took actions to neutralise the soldier. The United Nations is a major international organisation and will need to respond to the issue. The most likely outcome is a thorough investigation on the incident. With the islamist insurgency in the region, this puts unneeded strain on international relations and on the national government. It is also possible that the soldier was an islamic insurgent. however, until the investigation is complete, it is hard to say what motivated the soldier to fire upon the pilot and kill two others, including a fellow soldier.

This incident relates to class regarding our discussion on different theories of international relations, including realist theory and liberal theory. The United Nations is the largest IGO in existence and has considerable power. Liberal theory argues that international organisation can help prevent conflicts, however, random and unexplainable cases such as these argue against this theory. While it may be unfair to count a freak avent against a tried and proven theory, it does raise some concerns.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/nigerian-soldier-kills-aid-worker-injures-un-helicopter-pilot-2022-11-17/ On thursday, November 17th, A Nigerian soldier fired upon and wounded a United Nations helicopter co-pilot at a military compound in northeastern Nigeria.
