The protesters massed at in the capital of Dakar on Tuesday, and is one of the three days planned for this protest. They are marching with Ousmane Sonko who is the main opposition candidate to President Macky Sall. They are protesting because of Sall’s unfair policies towards the people and the fact that running for a third term would be considered unconstitutional. Sall has neither confirmed or denied that he will be running again but there is widespread speculation that he is planning to do so. Sonko is a very popular candidate that is running for president and he is representing many urban youth that live in Senegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I think that this is a very powerful fight for democracy going on right now in Senegal and the people are upset with their government because they are not providing jobs for them and the President is using unethical methods of imprisonment and brutality. In 2012 Macky Sall became the president of Senegal and in 2020 suggested running for a third term, six months after signing a law which abolished the position of Prime Minister. Sall has also been accused of embezzlement by Sonko, and claims that his accusations are simply politically motivated. No charges were made against Sall due to the lack of evidence. In 2021 the opposition leader Ousame Sonko was arrested over rape allegations which led to widespread protest in support of Sonko for him to be released and it is believed that Sall creates lies in order to defeat his political opponents. Sonko was later released a few days after the protests occurred and could not leave the country and was not allowed to talk to the press about the rape case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Link to article: https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/thousands-senegal-opposition-supporters-gather-three-day-protest-2023-03-14\/ Over 10,000 people in Senegal are protesting the president of Senegal for wanting to run for a third term in the 2024 election.
