The inspection of the site had to be pushed back from last year because of the security issues of the area. Libya has been in almost constant civil war since a 2011 NATO backed coup ousted Muammar Gaddafi, who had renounced the Libyan nuclear program in 2003. This nuclear program had technology and designs to create a nuclear bomb but reportedly made little progress. The UN watchdog said that the missing uranium “…may present a radiological risk, as well as nuclear security concerns.”

While it is worrying to see nuclear material go missing, especially when it is the exact kind of material that is made to make nuclear weapons, I would like to imagine that it is not a serious threat. While I am far from an expert on, or even very educated about for that matter, how to build a nuclear weapon, I imagine that it takes lots of time and technology that wouldn’t be available to rebel groups of the area, simply because of the highly complex nature of the subject.

In class we have discussed the role of the UN, and this showcases not only the peace-keeping roles of the UN, but also its collective goods responsibilities. Libya is currently run by an interim government established by the UN in early 2021. Although this government was meant to only last until elections were held in December, it has still brought governmental stability to a nation that sorely needs it after nearly a decade of civil war. As well, it is likely that the missing uranium would have never have been discovered or reported if it weren’t for the UN’s action to control nuclear weapons and environmental threats world wide.

https://www.france24.com/en/africa/20230315-un-nuclear-watchdog-says-2-5-tonnes-of-uranium-missing-from-libyan-site A UN nuclear watchdog found that 10 barrels containing 2.5 tons of natural Uranium ore concentrate have gone missing in Libya.
