The military retaliated and according to Burkina Faso’s general killed around 40 militants. These extremists groups that have been linked to al-qaeda and the islamics state groups have been waging war in burkina faso for but 7 years now and with burkina going through two coups the attacks have only increased in the unstable country. The current junta leader Ibrahim Traore has promised to make the country secure but his forces have actually scared much of Burkina’s people with them being accused of killing civilians and kidnapping and people suspected of being dissidents. People can’t even evacuate as the jihadists have blocked villages pinning people in between the army and them. The security forces’ killing of civilians has led to the UN calling for an investigation into the army over human right abuses.

BUrkina faso originally a pretty peaceful country, has due to two essentially back to back coups with the last one being in part fueled by a dislike of french influence in the country jihadists have continued their resurgence in the country and attacking the military. Many people view the attacks as being caused due to gold reserves that Burkina Faso is sitting on. I expect Burkina Faso to become even more of a war zone with the jihadists not letting people leave and the security forces attacking the people it’s supposed to protect. I doubt Burkina will let the UN do an investigation on the army, especially as it seems that they are very guilty of human right abuses. I’d expect for the president to probably get ousted again, maybe with French help and for people to continue even if they try to evacuate. I don’t see an end in sight for this and unfortunately many will suffer. This is compounded by the fact that the people of burkina faso can’t even trust their own army as they are killing and jailing many innocent people which is the like number one thing of any far right military junta so i expect it to become very bloody.

well this relates to just general topics we’ve talked about like military governments and how a country’s people can’t disagree with their countries allies and the consequences that has. BUrkina faso had allied itself too much with the french or as many saw the colonizers who had pillaged and intervened in burkina faso for years an years throwing coups and crippling their self autonomy so when they overthrew the french backed coup many thought it would lead to more peace but the jihadists have continued to resurged and the junta has become very violent killing and jailing people for any reason they can ind as the country becomes more and more embroiled in a war against the extremists.

Link: https://apnews.com/article/burkina-faso-jihadis-islamic-extremism-soldiers-killed-b442bd7519afcf99280a6be2effac642 an islamic extremist group in Burkina Faso launched an attack against the military killing 33 soldiers and wounding others.
