The Security Council has also strongly communicated their worries towards these illegal exploitations. This illegal exploitation is being committed by individuals, governments, and armed groups within the Region. At the Council meeting, the U.S. Representative, also reminded the panel that the profits made on these natural resources were, in no way, benefiting the Congolese people. The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the DRC has expressed his disappointment in the Panels late decision on this issue.

I know this has a major impact on the DRC, the DRC’s economy, and the Regions surrounding it. This is truly an injustice to the Congolese people and shows how foreign governments will treat each other for an uphand. The estimation of natural resources come out to be worth $24 Trillion Dollars, and of that $24 Trillion Dollars, the DRC has only made $69 Billion. The DRC is clearly being robbed and if they could only harness the full potential of their natural resources and gather every last bit of their taxes, they could easily be making tens of billions more in profit.

This exploitation of natural resources in the DRC connects to class in many different ways. The Democratic Republic of Congo is home to many valuable resources such as diamonds, gold, iron, coal, cobalt, and many others. The DRC has the largest reserves of cobalt and seventh largest reserves in copper. With Today’s day in age, the global demand for all of these resources are extremely high with an increase in global conflicts.

Article:https://press.un.org/en/2001/sc7057.doc.htm The UN Security Council has condemned illegal exploitation of natural resources and wealth of the DRC.
