Recently, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, offered to be a median between the two countries. Somaliland rejected this offer from Museveni and stated that they would not discuss reunification, but will move forward with them as separate countries. Contrary to this statement, heavy fighting broke out between Somaliland forces and militiamen in the town of Las Anod, since this there have been thousands of people displaced, killed or injured. This was somewhat shocking news, seeing as Somolialand has been largely peaceful but the recent negative actions have made the outlook on this nation as not peaceful.

Analysis: the separation of this country is similar to the many we’ve seen in the past including China and Taiwan and Russia and Ukraine. Most times in the past in situations like this we see tensions continually rise in many different areas between the two nations. With the aggression that has started to break out, there is a big possibility that the countries could have further disagreements. Another interesting aspect of this is the input of the Ugandan President, him adding input on this issue adds to the question of what his motive is. Does he have a motive to find political power in the reunion of these countries? Or does he have ulterior motives? This input leaves a lot of room for interpretation seeing another possibility of his motives could be just the separation the Somalia makes trade or other resources more difficult to achieve.

Connection to class: this is a perfect example of an unrecognized state, something that we have learned about numerous times. The possibilities are endless, with states like this, as to what further conflicts could ensue. As we saw with Ukraine, countries hold grudges in situations like these, depending on how Somalia views this issue it could lead to conflict years or even decades from now. Another situation similar to this is the separation of Taiwan from China, another situation we have inspected countless times in class. We see those tensions continually rise due to how important Taiwan’s chip imports are to the economy. If Somaliland has a resource that Somalia deems a necessity we could see huge rises in tensions between these countries.

Link to Artical: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/9/25/somaliland-rejects-talk-of-unification-with-somalia-after-museveni-comment Summary: Somaliland separated from Somalia in 1991 but has not gained international recognition.
