The poll was taken about a year after the Haiti prime minister asked for the prompt of deployment of military forces in an attempt to reduce the violence and make it more secure so that long overdue elections could take place in the country. The magnitude of those forces’ consequences had not initially been apparent. The kenyan government proposed sending out 900+ officers.

Analysis: After the president was assassinated in July, it was promised that Haiti would await general elections. It is anticipated that the deployment of armed forces will bring peace and stability back to the country. This shows that there may be hope for the gang violence to calm down and the forces will most likely help to bring Haitian civilians to a more secure and stable point. But it also makes me question whether or not the police will worsen it or make the gang violence situations better. Opponents of the Kenyan-led effort have pointed out that the police do in fact have a reputation of being accused of including deadly forces.

Connection to Class: This decision made by the UN connects to our class because it highlights the positive relationship established between Kenya and Haiti. In times of need Kenya is willing to help haiti and it shows through the placement of the troops. The two nations have diplomatic connections to one another which helps facilitates cooperation on issues like politics and culture. Both nations can take part in trade and work alongside on international issues like climate change. I think its important for Kenya to help Haiti with gang violence because supporting each other in times of struggles encourages unity and promotes stability.

Link to article(s): https://time.com/6319951/haiti-kenya-forces-un/ Summary: The article talks about how the first time in 20 years the UN council authorized the deployment of troops under kenyan leadership to aid Haitians in combat gang violence.
