Russia has a larger influence on Africa and Africa’s policy making than most might realize. Russia’s activity in Africa as a whole is growing stronger, reinforcing ties that remind the world of the Cold War. Russia’s unique approach among other external actors is to rely on certain “irregular and extralegal” means to increase its influence, this includes, deployment of mercenaries, disinformation, election interference, support for coups, and arms for resources deals. For Russia, this is a low risk, high reward strategy to push forward a very different and new world order. This all will have a heavy undertone on governance norms and security on the continent.

I believe Russia has a larger influence on Africa and Africa’s policy making than most might realize. Russia sees Africa as an important foothold because of their tons of natural resources, with nearly $24 Trillion dollars. Many of these resources include cobalt, copper, diamond, gold, iron, coal, and timber. Africa has the largest reserve in cobalt which is the the #1 use for lithium-ion batteries and many other important manufacturing needs. Africa also has the seventh largest reserve for copper which is used in a lot of electrical equipment such as wiring and motors.

Russia is the world’s largest nuclear power. It is clear that Russia is intent on increasing its influence in Europe and Africa with the trade of natural gas and many other natural resources, that is one reason Russia is moving forward in gaining a strong foothold in Africa. Despite its relatively small GDP, Russia is still a threat in many ways. Russia is the world’s second largest producer of natural gas and the largest gas exporter with 45% of their budget coming from the revenue of oil and natural gasses. Think about it, Russia has one of the largest reserves of natural gasses, but if Russia also has a strong foothold in the cobalt industry and other renewable energy sources then they would be dominating in both markets.

Article: https://africacenter.org/in-focus/russia-in-africa/ Russia’s play on Africa is growing more clear.
