The United States has claimed that China is using Africa to play “geopolitical games” with the west and is only using African debt to push their political and global agenda. The United States is skeptical of China’s debt-trapping because China has used to trade and pay off African countries’ debts to keep a strong arm over most of Africa. By having the majority of Africa “owe you” you can continue to strong arm the country and push your agenda with minimal interference from the west and Russia. Im curious to see what actions the west and Russia take to prevent the Chinese will across Africa.

Critics have long accused Beijing of engaging in debt-trap diplomacy, a predatory lending practice that involves it luring poorer countries into taking out loans for expensive infrastructure projects that are doomed to fail. When borrowers can’t pay back their debt, China goes in and seizes strategic assets that boost its dominance internationally.

Claims of debt trapping are serious issues. Debt trapping strategies lead to damaging diplomatic relations between China and borrowing countries which may lead to global tensions. When debt is not possible to pay off, borrowing countries become dependent on China, this also leads to Chinese influence. Dept trapping has big economic impacts not only on the country borrowing from China but other countries globally. This relates to International Relations class because of economic, diplomacy, global tension, and global influences.

Article: https://www.reuters.com/world/china-rejects-africa-debt-trap-claim-ahead-us-africa-summit-2022-12-12/ China has rejected the United States’ “debt-trapping” claim.
