The document was created in May of 2000 and it was created to support economic growth and free markets. It is used as the foundation for trade agreements and good relations with these nations as a whole. In order to have eligibility for AGOA and to reap its benefits an African nation needs to make progress towards market based economies, and the rule of law and political pluralism. The African state of Niger recently lost eligibility due to the recent coup that was held in the nation’s capital. The agreement is very important to American governing officials. U.S trade representative Katherine Tai said this, “Our historical ties, our people-to-people ties, the fact that the United States grew out of our own colonial past. There are so many points of shared cultural historical narrative that is the cornerstone of our partnership.” The forum is held from a high value standpoint. With the agreement ending in 2025 American President Joe Biden made communication with congress and expressed his support of a renewal of the AGOA agreement.

This agreement can prove beneficial to all parties involved. Even though lots of African nations don’t have the resources or infrastructure necessary to help the United States economically or militarily, the incentive is to have good relations and leave your footprint in that part of the world. The continent of Africa is very unstable and fragile and may need outside help with getting on its feet. Sending in NGO’s and other humanitarian organizations can certainly help with human rights issues especially in the short term. But in the long term the biggest help to these struggling nations will be to help build stronger and more stable economies. As these economies grow the resources available to these nations grow. Using the resources gained to benefit the citizens. Alongside the newly strengthened economies the AGOA aims to diversify African economies as well. That can cause high employment rates and encourages further economic growth. There is a bit of a domino effect that causes the lasting impact on the region, which is very positive and beneficial.

Mutual agreements are a very important part of international relations. If this helps me in some way and this helps you in some way it only makes sense for us to do it. Even though the United States doesn’t have to be the protector and overseer of all weaker and less capable nations the AGOA still makes sense from an American perspective. Even from more of a morally right way to look at things. African nations can lose their eligibility just by ignoring the human rights of their population. This idea of mutual agreement has been around since the very beginning, but very rarely does it make sense on so many levels. It should be high on everybody’s priority list to make sure that this forum is renewed in due time.

Link to Article: AGOA Is Cornerstone of U.S. Economic Ties with Africa The African Growth and Opportunity Act or, AGOA, is an agreed forum between the United States and many African countries.
