Al-Shabaab, regarded as a terrorist group by the Somalian government, is a military group fighting to overthrow and overtake Somali leaders. It is a group of Sunni and Islamic political nationalists. 1,650 members of the group have been killed with many more injured within an internal Somali Civil War. Starting in the early 90s the Somali Civil War has been devastating for not only Somali citizens but for the entire African region. With rising famine and drought coupled with war many Somali residents have had to flee causing them to be displaced from their homes and livelihoods. Due to the Al-Shabaab attacks Somali regional officials have called for an extension of the deadline set for African Union troops to leave Somalia due to the ‘unstable nature of Al-Shabaab.

Being responsible for assassinations of Somali peace activities, international aid workers, and civil society figures on multiple occasions Al-Shabaab has become a heavy hitting player in the internal conflict in Somalia. During the 2011 famine the group was a part of a plot to block the delivering aid from some western relief agencies which resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians. With Al-Shabaab being a high threat to peace and security in the region it is a huge advantage having done so much damage to the group internally. Furthermore with the extension of the deadline for African Union troops it seems that Somalis are looking to finish them off. Essentially kicking them while they’re down. This could mean a high turning part in the war and that would mean relief for Somalia and the surrounding area as well.

An independently acting terrorist group involved in Civil War causes there to be even more pieces in play then there normally is. The pressure put on by a terrorist group causes the governing body too have to react and normally causes change to public opinion. Within the Civil War public opinion is a highly dangerous factor. With internal war comes sides and making a choice of which side to affiliate yourself with. With the sway of public opinion that comes with terrorist actions causes there to be sway within the act of allegiances. When you have such a large and influential group such as Al-Shabaab there are very few choices but to fight violence with violence. With the killings of multiple higher ups and soldiers of Al-Shabaab causes there to be chances to eradicate the organization and have a tighter grasp on stability in the nation.

Link to Article: Hundreds of Al-Shabaab Members Killed, Says Somali Govt Somali governing officials announced the death of 19 Al-Shabaab leaders.
