South Africa claims that Israel has conducted several war crimes against the innocent Palestinian civilians, and must be declared a state that separates its people based on these crimes. Although an inquiry to follow through with the title has been ongoing since 2021, the Israeli embassy in South Africa is now closed and diplomatic ties with Israel have stopped until a ceasefire is declared.

This article is significant today largely due to South Africa’s history of apartheid, with South African president Cyril Ramaphosa appearing to agree with the actions taken against Israel after publicly shaming Israel for their alleged war crimes. By them specifically calling out Israel to be an apartheid state is bringing up decades of difficult South African history of struggle for the same reasons. It’s interesting to me that the only country that was ever in apartheid is the one standing tall on their viewpoints of the Israelis in this matter. With this current accusation, it’s difficult to tell how trade relations between Israel and South Africa will be affected by this, as neither has directly claimed any pause on trade. South African exports to Israel have reportedly been worth 255 million USD, and although this value is probably only a small fraction of their exports, perhaps a halt on them would cause issues in their economy. Since South Africa is a more regionally powerful country within Sub-Saharan Africa and a pioneer in international relations on the global stage, it could sway some of the few African countries that still side with Israel. It’s important to note that some of the poorer countries in Africa hold support for Palestine in this conflict, and it’s likely this sense of colonialism that they once had. Like many African countries, Palestine is a poor, densely populated region where global powers do not support their independence and constantly is a violent state against their rulers.

In class, we have been talking about liberal theories and how they pertain to the international stage. Commercial peace theory is a sub-theory of liberalism and highlights how states will refrain from fighting and engaging in war because it is not economically beneficial. While South Africa may openly resent Israel, perhaps they won’t break the trade relations they have because it simply wouldn’t benefit anybody.

https://allafrica.com/stories/202311240337.html On November 24, 2023, South Africa petitioned the International Court of Justice to declare Israel an apartheid state, or a state with institutionalized segregation, following the events of the Israel-Hamas war.
