By the end of August, Egypt had landed aeroplanes in Somalia’s capital and Egypt has planned to have 5,000 of their soldiers join the African Union force by the end of this year. With the conflict between Egypt and Ethiopia about the GERD, Ethiopia is worried about this new found alliance and what it could mean for them in the future having Egyptian soldiers close to their border. Ethiopia and Somalia’s relationship is also at odds due to a conflict over Somaliland (an autonomous region that broke away from Somalia in 1991). Ethiopia made a deal with Somaliland to have a section of the coastline for 50 years, in order to set up a naval base. Somalia believes Somaliland is still part of their territory and Somalia fears that by Ethiopia making this deal, Somaliland’s independence is being recognized. Due to many conflicts between Somalia and Ethiopia, Somalia decided not to include Ethiopia in the African Union peace support. Ethiopia is already in the AU and Somalia has stated that if Ethiopia does not withdraw from the deal with Somaliland, the 5-7,000 soldiers located in several regions must withdraw from the AU. All of this leaves Ethiopia very vulnerable to attack and they will have to intensify their national security.

This article is very important because the ongoing conflicts between countries in the horn of Africa could lead to future conflicts and even war. The conflicts between Ethiopia, Somalia and Egypt could amplify the existing conflict within each of their countries and lead to widespread instability. These three countries could find themselves in a regional conflict that would affect neighboring countries as they may be brought in, leading to a rapid increase in the disputes. The Horn of Africa is also situated on the Suez Canal and the Red Sea which a large amount of global trade passes through. Many countries that rely on this trade route and ports may experience shortages if the region is experiencing conflict. Another major factor that could affect the Horn of Africa is Ethiopia’s troops being withdrawn from the AU. Ethiopia’s military was very helpful in defending against terrorist groups and without them, Africa could be vulnerable to an emergence of terrorist groups.

Ethiopia can respond to this conflict by enhancing their military, strengthening their engagement in diplomacy and strengthening their national security. If Ethiopia facilitated more civil dialogue with both Somalia and Egypt, the conflicts could be diminished and solved without the military getting involved. Somalia could also try to engage in more diplomatic dialogue with Ethiopia and also try to settle the territorial dispute with Somaliland. If Ethiopia and Somalia focused more on their internal conflicts before jumping into external affairs, their countries would become much more stable.

Link to Article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg415vex37o In August of 2024, Egypt and Somalia signed off on a military alliance with each other.
