Recently, Chad has started a dialogue with Russia, visiting Vladimir Putin last year and Russia’s foreign minister visiting Chad’s capital this past summer. Officials from Chad have discussed entering a military alliance with Russia because of Russia’s strong presence in their media and cultural influence. This alliance is deeply concerning for both the US and France. Russia and young voters in Chad have pushed for Chad to let go of its western alliances; this has caused Chad to rely on and seek out Russia further. This new anti-western idea is very unfortunate for France because they have a huge military base in the capital of Chad, N’Djamena and small bases scattered throughout the country. Neighboring countries to Chad like Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have asked thousands of soldiers from Paris to withdraw; Niger has also asked the US military to remove their drone base. All of these countries have really turned to Russia for military help, only worsening Jihadist-run governments. Chad is surrounded by weak and unstable countries on all sides; Chad is one of the most stable African countries because of its decade old ties with western allies. France and the US hope that Russia and Chad’s relationship does not hinder their own relationships with Chad and Chad doesn’t cut off their ties to the west.

This article is important because I think it shows the shifting alliances and powers involved in this region of Africa. Whatever Chad decides to do will greatly affect both the western side and Russia. The surrounding areas around Chad are very unstable and Chad’s growing bond with Russia may cause greater instability for Chad as well. Withdrawal of France and US military powers in Chad could cause imbalanced governing powers with Jihadists groups and national security could be greatly affected in Chad. European and US powers will not be able to protect much of Africa from terrorist groups and increasingly more authoritarian regimes may come to power in Africa. I think France and the US should heighten their engagement with Chad and remind Chad of the many benefits the western powers can offer. I think it would also be beneficial for western powers to emphasize their want to help the younger people of Chad with educational opportunities and increasing western influence in social media. Showing how France and the US can protect Chad from a very probable future of terrorist attacks on the country, could sway Chad’s decisions greatly.

When connecting this article to this class, we can consider the levels of analysis and why this event occurred. At a global level, Chad’s relations with Russia as well as western powers shows how competitive and impactful international relations really are. Based on the decisions Chad makes, many global actors will be affected economically and culturally. At a regional level, there is already a lot of instability surrounding Chad and Chad may find itself following suit as terrorist groups continue to take control of government power. At a state level, Chad may need to consider their next moves further because of the huge threat to national security in their future. Putin and the president of Chad, Mahamat Déby are key leaders that are making very crucial decisions that could affect the state of both countries.

Link to the article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx2kr40nlkpo Chad and France have had a strong alliance for the past few decades.
