This shut down at the Lebombo border crossing is due to violent post-election protests following the disputed presidential election, when the ruling Frelimo party won. The Frelimo party began as a nationalist movement fighting for the self-determination and independence of Mozambique from Portuguese colonial rule. Many are claiming that the election was rigged and that the Frelimo party was allegedly killing opposition supporters. In the past few days, protesters have torched vehicles and buildings, including an immigration office. South African authorities have implemented security measures, including firing rubber bullets at those attempting to cross. Several Mozambican officials are seeking refuge within South Africa during this time of uncertainty. So far these protests have resulted in at least 30 deaths and led to internet restrictions. The oppositions candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who lost the election, is in hiding after many of his close circle have been killed.

Analysis – The shutdown of the border between South Africa and Mozambique highlight the instability and severity that the unrest in Mozambique presents. The reason for the closure is to ensure security for South Africa as the stability of Mozambique declines after recent elections. The unrest is leading to immense violence within the region and many official are seeking refuge in South Africa. The shutdown may affect aspects like the economic stability in the region, as trade will be significantly impacted by the closure of the border and can disrupt supply chains regionally, and perhaps worldwide. The closure also raises multiple humanitarian issues as the people living near the border and regularly cross it for things like work, family and necessities such as food and water, will not be able to access the things which they might require in order to survive. Overall the shutdown of the crossing will severely disrupt the stability and livelihood in the region and possibly will require international involvement in order to carefully fix this issue.

Connection – The closure of the Mozambique/South Africa border is an example of multiple concepts within international relations. For example, the unrest shows that each country has a right to control its borders and ensure the safety of its citizens. This demonstrates Sovereignty and how sovereign states may react to perceived threats. The situation also explains the Security Dilemma and how actions taken by one state in order to achieve a national interest can lead to increased tensions and instability in the region.

Article – https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwygrne8363o Summary – Following last months presidential election in Mozambique, South Africa has shut down the border into the neighboring country.
