This wildlife reserve is a world heritage site, protected by the UN, boundaries were originally drawn by the Congo government 30 years ago, but over the years, an “unknown” cause gradually shrunk the protected areas. Thus, enabling the mining. The boundaries come from the ICCN, the International Climate Councils Network, which in meetings this year revealed that there was boundary confusing for the Chinese mining company, Kimia Mining. The ICCN clarified that these established boundaries are those that must be abided by. However, Rights groups in Congo have long said the permits were illegally awarded by the mining ministry based on inaccurate maps.

China has a history of loaning money to post-imperialism countries. The money is donated due to the guarantee that the economic state of the post-imperialism countries will not be able to repay. Then, they are forced to sell land to China, which China uses as bases, mines, and other various means of strengthening China’s foothold in the international system. Yet, it is important to remember that the UN protects the Okapi wildlife Reserve, thus making this dispute an international encroachment. It will be interesting to see if the ICCN or the UN step in, but since China is apart of the big 5 in the UN…this conflict may go south for the Okapis.

Rights groups in Congo have already taken action, but ENGO’s, Non-governmental Environmental Organizations, soon will arrive at the scene. The Okapi are an endangered species native to Congo. Kimia Mining will simply deplete the surrounding areas of natural resources, as well as introduce contamination into the environment. Since this would have a detrimental effect on the environment, even is borders were abided by, this goes to show how crucial it is for the UN, ENGO’s, and the ICCN to intervene.

https://apnews.com/article/congo-world-heritage-site-gold-mining-china-5e9499fd939c3c2d798a6165f3fc487b A okapi wildlife reserve situated in eastern Congo is threatened by a Chinese gold mining operation.
