The area where these ships were found are known departure points for migrants or refugees wanting to head towards Europe. It is reported by the Tunisian National Guard that the boats set sail around, “December 31 to January 1.” It was reported that 27 people have died, one reported to be a baby, and 83 people were rescued. 15 survivors were reported to be admitted into a hospital to receive aid. Those who passed away were taken to a local forensics department. Last month, there were reports about 30 bodies had been found from two serpent incidents, again with ships trying to sail to Europe. There has been roughly 600 – 700 people who have been killed or declared missing in shipwrecks off of Tunisia in 2024. Where in 2023 there were reports of around 1,300 people going missing or being found dead. The European Union (EU) has made a migration development agreement with Tunisia in 2023. This agreement aimed to prevent boats from leaving. The European Commission has not published “any information” related to these incidents. EU Ombudsman has spoken out that, “it is also impossible to overlook, in the context, the deeply distribinngw reports that continue to emerge about human rights situation in Tunisia, notable when it comes to the treatment of migrants.”

This a deviating event that sadly is not the first of its kind and will not be the last. The lack of human rights in these countries are is saddening to read about. Through the past couple year I feel as though I have heard about many accidents like these. These routes are dangerous and risky to do as an adult, but many kids are making this trick as well. The treatment of refugees and migrants is rough in almost everywhere. Looking at the United States is an example, people can look and see how there is a population of the country that doesn’t want more people coming in and settling down. Now take it and look at European states that less land to live in.

Tunisia Nation Guard seem to be more ground control and or more reactive to these incidents. They will provide help when a ship goes down but the treatment of these victims are not guaranteed. The National Guard is most likely very overwhelmed as well. With roughly 600-700 deaths and regular shipwrecks, there is almost a constant demand for support. But it has gone down over the past year, after the EU’s deal with Tunisia. The EU cannot handle the amount of migrants and refugees because it is unrealistic. Then there is also the logistical factors and the issue of how would this benefit Europe.

In class there is this constant topic of how actors will only act if they are getting something out of it. “I scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.” There is also the comparison to how states act realistically and not thinking for the better for everyone. Many people may want to help these people but European countries don’t have the space and most likely not get the best public response. States are made up by people so therefor they act as people, with emotion and self interest.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/1/2/at-least-27-people-killed-dozens-rescued-after-two-shipwrecks-off-tunisia On Thursday January 2, 2025 Al Jazeera reported on the National Guard responding to multiple shipwrecks being found outside of Tunisia.
