Gold mining, often involving harmful substances like mercury and cyanide, poses severe health risks to miners and devastates the environment. Painkillers used to mitigate these effects were among the confiscated items. Sand mining, a growing issue in Gambia, was also addressed, with arrests and the seizure of sand-loaded trucks. In South Africa, the rescue of illegal miners at an abandoned mine near Stilfontein revealed the harrowing conditions of informal mining, with over 500 people still believed trapped underground. These issues highlight the broader challenges of resource exploitation and its toll on people and ecosystems.

This article demonstrates the environmental and humanitarian crises driven by unregulated mining practices. The use of toxic chemicals in gold mining and the depletion of sand resources both exemplify unsustainable mining practices fueled by global demand. Interpol’s operation underscores the necessity of international collaboration, as these issues cross borders. The connection between poverty, resource scarcity, and exploitation is prominent within Africa, with illegal miners risking their lives in dire circumstances. This reminds me of the situation in Mali that I had written on with the gold mines. It is sad to see this connection between resource extraction being tied to economic disparity and postcolonialism as well as how these countries where the desired resources are being extracted from are often not in the best conditions themselves.

I wonder how the stakeholders involved will respond to this. Governments in West Africa should enforce stricter mining regulations and invest in alternative livelihoods for affected communities to reduce dependency on illegal mining. International Agencies, like Interpol, should continue providing support in tackling organized crime associated with resource exploitation in Africa. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can potentially raise awareness about the environmental and health consequences while also advocating for sustainable practices. This reminds me of when we were covering conflict theories in class and we talked about post colonial studies which explains Britain’s former colonies in the Caribbean, Africa and India and the common themes among them such as the struggle for independence, emigration, national identity, allegiance and childhood. These postcolonial ties can explain the relationship between my three stories that I did my blog posts on such as the situation with gold being seized by Mali, the issue in the Congo and M23, and the case with Interpol. I am curious as to if there is a way in which Africa could revert these issues that have come with time from being colonies.

Link to Article: https://apnews.com/article/interpol-west-africa-illegal-mining-arrests-95eb68d0dc2351485b081865e0a61eff Interpol’s recent Operation Sanu, spanning Burkina Faso, Gambia, Guinea, and Senegal, targeted illegal gold and sand mining, resulting in 200 arrests and the seizure of toxic chemical, explosives, and equipment.
