Trump signed an executive order that halted all aid to South Africa in punishment for Trump’s team’s claims of “rights violations” by the South African government on the white population. These accusations resulted from South Africa’s Expropriation Act signed into law last month that allows the government to take land in specific instances where it is not being used or where it would be beneficial to the public to be redistributed. The Trump administration claimed this as an attack on white Afrikaner farmers- the South African government denied these statements. Afrikaners, a group of people descended mainly from Dutch colonial settlers who arrived in South Africa more than 300 years ago, stated that they will not be following Trump’s offer of resettlement in the United States. South Africa’s Foreign Ministry stated the irony of how refugee status was given to one of the most economically privileged groups in South Africa while also disapproving of the U.S. deporting people who are actually vulnerable. Despite being a minority in South Africa, whites own 70% of private farmland and 1% of whites lived in poverty compared to 64% of Blacks.

Born in South Africa, Elon Musk took to speaking out against said discrimination against the white population in South Africa mostly due to the Expropriation Act. Soon later, Trump stopped aid and financial assistance to South Africa for these reasons as well as South Africa’s decision to support a genocide case against Israel. Trump’s claims are inexact especially with data showing whites, including Afrikaners in South Africa are one of the most well-off groups in the country. This stems from South Africa’s apartheid in which non-white South Africans were segregated under the all-white (Afrikaner) government. It is astonishing to me that the Trump administration would think these things and take such actions when one can see South Africa’s historic land ownership disparities resulting from colonialism and apartheid. But, as taught in class, all actions are due to a strategic reason that should not be viewed through a political lens. Taking this approach, I suppose Trump is making these decisions to harm South Africa due to their position on Israel (with U.S. now being a heavy supporter of Israel) and South Africa’s relationship with U.S. adversary, Iran. The South African government denies U.S. accusations, emphasizing that the Act was created to rectify historical injustices and does not target any specific racial group. Afrikaners have expressed their commitment to remain in South Africa. The suspension of aid from the U.S. is a risk to vulnerable populations in South Africa, especially thinking of the programs designated to help HIV/AIDS problems in the country.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/trump-south-africa-afrikaners-0120efec17122b47e3371e0e39fe1db8 A plan that President Donald Trump announced which offered refugee status in the United States to South Africa’s white minority, was rejected in a recent response by the group.
