Over 3000 others have been injured from this conflict around just the region and the hospitals are being overwhelmed. The M23 rebels have been trying to seize the eastern region of the DRC due to it’s rich minerals that it has in the region. Bethesda hospital, a hospital located in the city of Goma has experienced a large amount of people with them saying over 100 people have been coming in for injuries. The problem is that the hospital only has a capacity of 250 and it’s exceeding that by a large portion. Many hospitals around the region are experiencing the same thing. All hospitals around the region have been experiencing this difficulty as they are running out of resources to help the wounded. Over 6.5 Million people have been displaced by this conflict, many seeking shelter in Goma.

This conflict in the DRC is important as over 6.5 million people have fled to seek refuge in the region and that creates a dangerous disruption as many are leaving to seek cover in other nations. This could affect the stability of the region and with it already being in a shatterbelt it could become even worse of a conflict. This is already a large humanitarian crisis and it could be an even bigger crisis as it would continue to displace more people and others are suffering due to the lack of medical supplies.

The Rwandan rebels may retreat and this conflict would end turning the region into a more stable area but that is very unlikely due to the DRC’s important minerals. The DRC’s government forces could also give the region to the Rwandan rebels which is also very unlikely. The most likely scenario would be for a major world leader to step up like the US to call for a ceasefire. Many humanitarian groups would most likely be trying to get governments to try and get a ceasefire deal in place as it’s killing hundreds and will kill and injure many more as time goes on. The region being in a shatter belt is super important as the rebels say that the DRC is a failed government. The instability in the region would likely result in many more conflicts and ultimately it’s up to the world leaders to step in. The US could use a off shore balancing approach and let Africa resolve the issue themselves until it becomes a major issue and then we would step in to stop it.

Article Link: https://apnews.com/article/goma-congo-hospitals-shortages-3c959524dd46c226393da6d11e7de600 Major conflicts in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo especially in the city of Goma has turned deadly as many areas dealing with a conflict with over 700 dead in just the city of Goma.
