Reports say that the children found the uniforms and had put them on and they were eventually executed after the M23 rebels saw them in the uniform. 3 children were reported to be executed by the M23 rebel group striking a huge set back to international humanitarian treaties. The UN office of human rights office had said that they found reports of this happening in the eastern parts of the DRC. The children had reportedly also found rifles along with the uniforms and they had also been messing around with them along with the uniforms left by the government forces.

The executions of the children are a major set back in humanitarian treated as they violate many of them. Children that were playing around with uniforms should not be executed as they were simply mistaken and didn’t know. Many treaties prevent this from happening especially to children as they never inflicted any pain upon other nations and rebel groups. This would most likely result in many humanitarian aid groups to be calling for help from major nations to help step in to enforce a ceasefire. Although not all nations will help with this issue many aid groups will step in to help the people of the country especially with all the refugees in the region as a result of the conflict.

The M23 rebels have an option to stop the conflict entirely or to follow human right treaties that are put in place to prevent these types of tragedies from occurring, however, most countries will not follow these rules during times of war as mostly likely everyone involved will have violated the rights. The major world powers could stop in and try and put a ceasefire in place to stop the conflict as they are trying to gain the precious resources within the eastern DRC region as they are rich in it. The important region being a shatter belt will result in many of these conflicts as they are prone to conflicts from the weak and or corrupt government that are in place. The Rwandan rebels are looking out for what’s best for their country and that’s gaining territory in order to expand their power. Having access to the precious resources would allow them to trade more to other countries and would give them a voice in the world stage as they would have resources that world powers would need.

Article Link: https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/children-were-executed-by-m23-congos-bukavu-un-says-2025-02-18/ Children were found to be executed by the Rwandan rebel group M23 in the city of Bukavu.
