It is reported that the 12 mariners on board were safe and unharmed. Crew members confirmed that suspected pirates had abandoned the vessel after stealing any goods of value on the ship. Piracy has been a prominent off the Somali Coast for decades but it peaked in 2011 with 237 attacks were reported. As the years have progressed the threat of piracy has decreased because of more international naval patrol. Sadly attacks have increased again over the past year due to insecurity with Yemen’s Houthi rebels. There have been 7 reported incidents off Somalia in 2024 alone.

Due to the vulnerability in Somalia it is not a surprise that piracy is still an issue. The region has faced much conflict and it will probably continue. There has already been lasting affects on Somalia due to piracy. There is a high chance that it will be decades more. The piracy defiantly affects the trade in the area which affects the economy badly. Trade in the Horn of Africa is a struggle due to insecurity in the regions governments.

Putting Atalanta in the waters by the Somali coast was a tactical decision. It definitely sets a new president that there will be less piracy or at least efforts to slow it down again. Somalia will greatly benefit from Atalanta in the waters. Trade can possibly increase again and there will be less money going into paying ransoms, along with other things. The piracy in the region has cost the world’s economy almost $7 billion.

In class we discuss how having military power is a key factor to a state’s success but if that military is in constant chaos then there is no power to obtain. If the states in the Horn of Africa were to someone come to peace diplomatically there wouldn’t be as big of a president for military power. Much can be done by conversation and discussion, force is not always the best way to go. As we have seen within history.

https://apnews.com/article/somalia-piracy-ship-freed-european-atalanta-3cdb4432d916c0f75d59743ee95a32a0 A naval force known as EUNAVFOR Atalanta helped free a Yemeni fishing boat that was suspected to be seized by Somali pirates.
