South Africa has developed a neutral position in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and is continuing to attempt to be the mediator and host peace talks so the two can come to a peaceful resolution to end the war. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine now has a planned meeting on April 10 with South Africa’s leader Cyril Ramaphosa with hopes of more peace talks with Russia that are inclusive for all parties involved. This plan comes after the US’s decline in support of Ukraine and a call for other countries, especially European ones to step up in help for the war. South Africa has interest in talks with Russia because of their involvement in BRICS and has talked with Russia and Ukraine separately and together for the past few years. South Africa also has a meeting with the European Union upcoming which will very likely include talks of peaceful ways to end the war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think this article is important because it shows how many countries, even neutral countries far out of the way of a regional conflict such as South Africa, can be involved in a conflict. It makes the world seem smaller and more interconnected when you are able to see how many countries are truly involved in a conflict and their different views and solutions to it. I think South Africa’s position and willingness to host peace talks is very important for resolutions because it provides a “safe space” for both countries to go to. I believe that these talks will help the conflict to come to more resolutions and will allow South Africa to become a more prominent member of the larger powers in the world that function more independently because they are so far geographically removed from many conflicts and because they take a more neutral approach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I believe that South Africa will respond to these upcoming events by staying neutral and staying involved in the conflict as long as they have an interest in Russia. I also believe that they and other countries will become more involved since the US is lessening their involvement. I believe that Ukraine and Russia will attend the peace talks and hopefully, come closer to a real resolution, however, I don’t think these talks will “solve” the conflict because I believe that both sides are still very unwilling to bend. This connects to class because it shows how a local conflict can become a regional conflict and then even into a global conflict when many states all over the globe get involved in a conflict that was originally only between two countries. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
