This fighting cost almost 400,000 lives. Several officials and two ministers of the country’s Vice President were arrested and tensions have risen over these arrests. The UN Chairperson of the UN Commission on the Human Rights has stated that this regression could erase years of progress. Rather than resorting to fighting, the two leaders must refocus on peace processes and upholding human rights of South Sudanese citizens.

This conflict has been ongoing whether explicit or implicitly for the past roughly fifteen years. The divides in South Sudan run deep between political parties and ethnic groups. South Sudan is a very divided country and fighting between two factions is common which culminated in a war in 2015. If South Sudan descends into violent civil war again, many civilians lives will be lost and hundreds of thousands of refugees will be displaced into neighboring countries. Countries such as Uganda seek to preserve the fragile peace as to not assume responsibility for numerous refugees. Conflict within South Sudan could explode at any moment, and those on the outside looking in fear of a country shattering into civil war.

This conflict between rebel groups that support politicians within South Sudan is an internal threat. One rebel group may attempt to gain control of the government and instill a friendly regime. This is a medium level threat as it directly impacts South Sudan, and can have serious implications for neighboring countries. The UN may have to step in with humanitarian protection as genocide may occur if one side gains the upper hand to eliminate all possible opposition. A large scale military response may be needed, and Uganda is already stepping in to provide it.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/south-sudan-situation-deteriorating-alarming-pace-un-rights-body-2025-03-08/ Increased violence and political friction within South Sudan threatens a peace agreement reached in 2018 which ended a five-year civil war between Kiir and Machar forces, the South Sudanese President and Vice President.
