Trump said that foreign spending on Lesotho was an “appalling waste.” Lesotho, referred to as “The Kingdom in the Sky,” is home to around 2 million people and has the highest base altitude of any country. Mpotjoane stated he would be happy to invite Trump and the rest of the world to visit Lesotho. The United States has provided funds to Lesotho’s health and agriculture organizations and has supported its LGBTQ+ community. However, Trump has claimed that the eight million dollars given to Lesotho is all spent on promoting LGBTQ+ organizations. These claims follow the Trump administration’s cut to U.S. foreign aid to better suit the president’s “America First” policy. Lesotho is now starting to figure out ways to move forward after its health organizations are crumbling due to their loss of funds. Mpotjoane has responded to Trump by saying that Lesotho has to accept that they can no longer rely on U.S. aid, but it is insulting for Trump to refer to Lesotho in that way.

This article is important because it shows how other countries are affected by the new U.S. policies and foreign aid cuts. The latest U.S. policies are making countries more self-sufficient, or they will reach out to other powerful countries for help. This can impact the region because many people will not have access to medical organizations in their country and might leave so they can get help in other countries.

After Donald Trump’s U.S. aid funding cuts, Lesotho is moving toward becoming a self-reliant country, however, as a small landlocked state surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho should look to other countries for funding and economic security. This will help Lesotho become more self-reliant without hurting its economy. Donald Trump’s “America First” policy includes billions of funding cuts to African nations, this will force those countries to shut down their sectors that are dependent on foreign support, or they will look to other countries for funding. The United States should continue to support small countries in Africa to keep other powers, like China, from having a strong influence in the country.

This directly connects to what we learn in class by discussing the causes of conflicts. This article comes from an individual issue between the presidents of the two countries. Since Trump and Mpotjoane have different views on how U.S. foreign aid should be spent, they have clashed in the media.

Link To Article On Wednesday, March 5, 2025, Lejone Mpotjoane, Lesotho’s foreign minister, stated he was insulted by U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim that no one had heard of the country in his address to Congress on Tuesday.
