Tensions between the conflict have been rising due to the conflict between the Rwandan rebel group M23 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Many African countries have attempted to create a ceasefire between the DRC and M23. March 23 Movement (M23) is a Rwandan Tutsi-led rebel group invading the DRC’s Eastern territory. Rwanda has given Belgium’s diplomats 48 hours to leave after cutting relations with the country. Rwandan officials have claimed that Belgium is creating a negative view of Rwanda by spreading lies. Maxime Prevot, Belgium’s foreign affairs minister, has stated that Rwanda decided to expel their diplomats without prior conversation. Brussels has responded by removing all Rwandan diplomats.

This conflict is bringing international attention to Rwanda as it continues to deny association with M23. This article is important to the region because it shows how Rwanda is losing relationships with foreign countries due to the conflict in the DRC. This could lead to a ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since this conflict has been giving Rwanda a bad reputation with its allies.

Belgium should not try to rebuild relations with Rwanda because it could show them that they can still fund M23. This will slow down any potential ceasefire within the DRC. Rwanda should not voluntarily push out any other countries’ diplomats because they will become untrustworthy to their other allies. The Democratic Republic of the Congo now has an opportunity to better its relations with Belgium and use their support to push back M23 and create more security along their Eastern border.

This article directly connects to what we learned in class by discussing rebel groups as security threats. The conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo with M23 is a security threat with a high threat assessment because it has forced thousands of people to flee their homes and more than 2,000 people have been killed.

Link To Article On Monday, March 17, 2025, Belgium and Rwanda sent away each other’s diplomats.
