Machar, the leader of the opposition to the current government, was put under arrest along with his wife at his house when 20 vehicles arrived. There was a peace agreement made in 2018 where the goal was to stop the fighting and come to a peaceful resolution that would be safer for the citizens of South Sudan. Since early March, conflict has continued to increase between airstrikes, army base invasions, and other arrests. The UN and many of the foreign embassies in South Sudan are pleading for a peaceful solution to stop the continuing conflict to save the people and not create a worse humanitarian crisis.

I think this article is very important because it reflects the instability of South Sudan and how that affects foreign countries including the US, UK, Germany and Norway because of their embassies and the safety concerns the war is posing to them. I also think it highlights the difficulties that come with creating a new country especially out of civil war and how that can pose continuing government problems with differing opinions on how to run a country and who should run it. I think this arrest will escalate the conflict and tensions between the sides of the war even more so that the war will now continue more violently than it has the past few years after the attempt at the peace agreement.

I believe that Machar’s side of the war will be very reluctant to continue with any peace agreement talks unless Machar is released, and even then I think they will be very hesitant because of what they would call a lack of political goodwill to achieve peace and stability” from the opposing side. I believe that Kiir’s side with the current government will not want to let Machar go because it gives them a sense of control and something valuable to bargain with, but it is detrimental to the ending of the civil war as a whole. This connects to what we are learning in class because it deals with the issues of legitimacy in government, internal armed conflicts and human rights issues.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/south-sudan-riek-machar-arrest-66a34271b9b6af9893e2bc14301c6fcb This article captured a new development in the South Sudan civil war.
