There is a very important US naval and bomber base on Diego Garcia which is the largest of the islands. Trump’s administration has agreed to the deal of handing over sovereignty of the islands from the UK to Mauritius, but has had some opposition to the decision because of the possibility of a security threat that comes with not having ownership of the land. The Uk is planning to lease back the area with the base on it for the next 99 years. This turning over of ownership from one country to another has made challenges for former civilians of the Chagos Islands because they now live in the UK, but would be urged to relocate again back to Mauritius and fear they would not be welcome.

I think that this deal would be very beneficial for Mauritius because it would give them more land which would give them more power, places to work and live for their citizens and resources from the islands. It could also be an important trade or military stop for allies. Having ownership over the islands would also help to bring in money from the lease on the Diego Garcia US military base along with possibly working closer with the US which could give military and economic advantages. I think that it will be less beneficial for the UK, but could be helpful for not having resentment between them and Mauritius and would free up some money and resources that could be put into other places closer to their country.

I believe that both countries will go through with this deal but that it will take more time than originally anticipated because of the changing of the government in Mauritius. I think that there will be a positive response from both countries because it doesn’t deal with armed conflicts and seems to be solely economic. This connects to class because it deals with post-colonial countries and territories becoming countries. It also deals with alliances and agreements based on economic means and values.

Link to article: https://apnews.com/article/chagos-islands-britain-mauritius-trump-e9adf18c4d9a5034652920a3b87e5fdd In 1965, Britain claimed the Chagos Islands, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. The ownership of the islands has been disputed for many years between the UK and Mauritius, a former British colony.
