After a US request for their release, the American citizens were sent into US custody. This handover follows significant diplomatic talks between the United States and the DRC as they focus on growing closer ties. The US is now interested in trade partnerships, specifically security cooperation, in exchange for critical minerals found in the DRC. The Congo’s current mineral resources are dominated by Chinese companies, and the US is interested in becoming involved during a time full of regional instability, regarding the M23 rebel group.

This is significant because the return of American citizens shows better diplomatic relations and opens the door more to US involvement in the region. As regional instability and violence continue within the Congo, this cooperation could lead to the start of US support to help promote peace and provide some sort of aid. On the other side of it, the US could create more economic and security relationships in Africa that can help undermine China in the area, as they influence most of the Congo’s mineral resources.

The US government can respond to the Congo’s transfer by continuing diplomatic communication with the Congo through continuing talks between US officials and the Congo’s leadership. The US can also help ease the regional tensions by possibly acting as a mediator between the DRC, Rwanda, and the M23 rebel group. We could also begin the security-mineral partnership by providing humanitarian aid and military or intelligence support to the DRC in exchange for important minerals like cobalt. The DRC can help use this action to promote other global relationships and find ways to build peace in the area.

I can connect this to class through liberal theory. The main idea of liberal theory is that states will help each other and cooperate on a global scale because of reciprocity, or the idea of mutual benefit. The DRC is willing to cooperate with the US and their interests because if so, the US will support their needs of security assistance to lessen the violence in the eastern Congo. The US will cooperate with the DRC because of their interest in influencing the mineral mining business in Africa.

Exclusive: Congo hands over Americans jailed over failed coup as talks on minerals progress | Reuters Three Americans were imprisoned in the Democratic Republic of the Congo after a failed coup attempt.
