There are now hundreds of thousands of individuals who are considered displaced persons. The attacks that are forcing people out of their homes are air strikes and bombings between Sudan’s People Liberation Army-in-Opposition and South Sudan’s People’s Defense Forces along with the White Army who is aligned with Machar, the vice president and opposition to the current president. In these camps and towns through the state, there is very limited food, water and aid so many are struggling to stay alive because they aren’t able to feed themselves and their families. Cholera is also breaking out in huge numbers with very little ways to stop it. Any aid attempting to get to these displaced civilians has been stopped because of the state of violence and the lack of roads or other ways to reach these towns.

This article is very important because it brings the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan to light. There are many articles on the state of the growing civil war and how the two parties are conflicting. These articles mention how they are hurting the civilian population, but this article gave personal stories about multiple families who have been displaced so that you can see the personal side to it. It shows that even though aid organizations want to help the population, they are unable to because of the state of the conflict. It gives insight into just how bad the situation is and the dwindling options for peace and recovery.

I believe that South Sudan will fall into a greater state of civil war until it becomes a full blown civil war again because there have been attempts for multiple peace treaties, but none have worked because of accusations of each party for not holding true to their part of the agreement. I don’t think that either party will be able to come to a civilized agreement because they won’t compromise their wants. This connects to what we have been talking about in class with humanitarian crises and a state’s government letting human rights violations happen because they aren’t in control over the state. It also connects to NGOs and their roles in armed conflicts and how they are able to attempt to work in South Sudan where IGOs would not be able to.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2025/5/6/we-are-suffering-displaced-families-bear-burden-of-south-sudan-conflict As the civil war in South Sudan continues to escalate, it is creating a great refugee and humanitarian problem.
