Peacekeeping Ministerial in Berlin, the German Foreign Minister, Johann Wadephul, stated that other nations would be unable to compensate if the United States withdrew its funding for the United Nations peacekeeping missions. He stated that the financial void left by the U.S. as its largest contributor would be too large for other countries to fully cover. General Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary, claimed that the Blue Helmets peacekeeping mission had major liquidity problems after asking members to pay in full. The withdrawal of the Blue Helmets to these countries will be detrimental, most likely undoing the progress that has been made. The United Nations should work on forcing the members to pay funding costs to match what the U.S. is putting in to keep them in the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This article directly connects to what we have learned in class by discussing the role of international institutions and how they need to focus on coordinating and facilitating cooperation among countries.
