China and Kenya signed multiple agreements in relation to education and overall investments from China into Kenya. This caused outrage amongst many US officials, notably Jim Risch. To paraphrase, he said that Kenya showing a sort of alignment to China is not just alignment but deeper down in allegiance to China. This however has been contested by Kenyan officials. Most importantly, chairman of the Defense, Intelligence & Foreign Relations Committee of Kenya’s National Assembly, Nelson Koech. His position was that Kenya doing deals with the China is nothing more that dealing with a big power in the world. Just as Kenya is deeply connected to the US, even being named a significant non-Nato ally by the Biden administration, they to will be connected to China. This is to show how Kenya will do their best to stay non-aligned in an ever polarising world.

I think that Kenya is a sovereign nation that can and should do what they please in the pursuit of creating the best nation that they can for their people. I think that the US officials remarks of how we should not ally ourselves with a nation in allegiance to beijing or that we should “reevaluate our position” is not something that should reflect of the US. Kenya has shown time and time again that they are not trying to sever relations with the US. If Kenya truly wanted to hurt the US they could have just severed ties. Just because your friends have other friends doesn’t mean that they hate you. I think that a lot of the time in the US we still think as if we were in the Cold War, this is a new world and we don’t want to continue to create more economic and power grasping vietnam like conflicts.

To start, Kenya is the main player in this conflict, they are the nation that is at the center of both the deals between China and America. They are the ones that have signed the deals with China and have had their officials deal with American backlash. Next would obviously be the United States. The US has not responded very kindly to the deals between China and Kenya, although expected, still not a great look on a global superpower. Lastly would be China. China has made the deals with Kenya which will spread Chinese influence in the nation exponentially.

To connect this article to our units I think that the topic of development and sustainability pops out instantly, you have to think about multiple angles to see the deeper reasoning. Obviously it fits due to the deals from China into Kenya being ones of development. However, if you really think about why China is doing this, China’s economy is thought to possibly collapse around 2030. So I think that this is a last ditch effort to gain more wins for the Chinese economy, kind of like a hail mary. China could have invested into a nation like India which would have given them a bigger return, but I don’t think that this is about the money. I think that China is trying to expand their influence while they can because in the very near future they won’t have an option to.

Link to article https://allafrica.com/stories/202506040015.html?
