The UN is calling to restore the previous constitution and return the president to the country, also stating they are willing to work with the AU (African Union) and SADC (Southern African Development community) to achieve this goal. This takeover comes with the recent history of political turmoil in the country, fueling the flames of the revolution. The army unit known as CAPSAT seized power following the impeachment of the president by parliament. The AU has suspended Madagascar following the instatement of a new president from CAPSAT. It has been promised that elections will be held within 2 years for more official positions. This condemnation and fund cutting from the UN and AU will only make the humanitarian crises within the country worse and create more instability.

I think that this article is important because it explains the new changes in government that have come from the people of Madagascar, and how UN and AU decision making could impact Madagascar. I think this change in governance could go 2 ways: one involving simply a reboot of the government with better policy, and the other being the creation of a dictatorship. I think that this could lead to issues with other states in the region with recognition and diplomacy possibly being affected. Based on what I read in the article mentioning the historical governance and humanitarian crisis, I think it makes sense that there would be instability. Maybe the new governance could have a positive effect on Madagascar, but right now it’s too early to say. I think the UN and AUs reaction could lead to more problems than simply letting the state figure itself out, causing more damage than letting this phase run its course. It could be that the UN and AU have information that was not stated in this article that could give better insight into the problems of CAPSAT, but with the given information there is no current immediately visible negative of the new governance.

Looking at this event from the levels of analysis gives insight into the situation. On the individual level this could be a power grab of the new president to gain control of the state, but could also be the hope for change and betterment of the country from the new president and CAPSAT’s eyes. From the state level this could be the betterment of life for the Malagasy people, and an end to the humanitarian crises. From the regional level this could be the goal for a better state to state relations, although the AU is viewing the change negatively. Finally, from a global level this could be to change the face of Madagascar and lead to positive development, even if the UN sees this as a problem.

Link to article: https://allafrica.com/stories/202510170012.html There has been a recent military takeover of Madagascar following extensive protests from young Malagasy, this takeover is being condemned by the UN.
