For reference Biya has been in office for almost 43 consecutive years. From the elections to opposition has come out saying that Biya’s win was no win and that it was a lie. In this the leader of the opposition minister Bakary called for protests to oppose the election and sources say that at least four people were killed in clashes with security forces. Along with this we see that over 105 protesters were arrested. In the past week or so dozens of opposition leaders have been arrested for supposedly plotting violent attacks. Finally, analysts warn of instability and political turmoil to come in cameroon due to almost all of the fragmented opposition parties claiming fraud.

Biya being the oldest president in the world by a long shot is not only going to take one of the more stable sub-saharan African nations and weaken it but that will also weaken the surrounding states. More importantly it will allow for terrorist groups and violent anti-state groups to become stronger. The claims of fraud also are not to far stretched as Biya has been know to not play fairly in elections. Biyas reelection, in my thought, will lead to a far weaker Cameroon and the region surrounding Cameroon. As seen directly after the election Biya used force to stop supposedly illegal protests but no one has said really why they were illegal. This could elude to more rights being lost for the Cameroonians.

Biya’s party will most likely respond as they have in the past. They are probably going to try and silence the opposition whether that be physical or by getting them taken off of national stage just like he did in the election with his top competitor. The opposition is much more complex, the major parties like that of Bakary will most likely do what they can to resist and oppose the new government. Smaller parties in the opposition will most likely do very little unless they can be united as one party against Biya. The rebels, Anglophone and Francophone, will most likely grow and will gain a larger stake in the nation due to this being a huge chance for them to become more legitimate. However worse than those two would be the growth of Boko Haram, Biya being seen as week will most likely lead to the growth of Boko because they will not fear retaliation from the state.

Hard power is the immediate connection that I would make, we could see the government using this by arresting protesters and politicians for speaking out against Biya. We could also see it being used by the people of the opposition, most notably when one member of the opposition stated that he would be willing to lay down his life to make sure Tchiroma would be in a position to make change.

Link to article : https://allafrica.com/stories/202510270673.html President Biya has won his eighth term making him the oldest state leader in the world.
