It is reported that he used AI tools in order to create false identities which he later used to target elderly victims through social media and dating sites by earning their trust before stealing their money. The sting comes after he began showing off his luxury items online to his Instagram followers, who questioned where he had gained so much wealth. Though Frederick Kumi is a Ghanian, he is being prosecuted under US law as a part of a broader operation within West Africa to seek out scammers and criminal networks.

Though Frederick Kumi is just one person, his arrest represents the leaps and bounds that the US and West African authorities are taking to take down criminal networks who are extorting US citizens, amongst others. Earlier in the month a Nigerian ring leader was also found and prosecuted, and was sent to prison for 20 years. If the United States is able to work closely with other countries to prevent scams and launderers, then not only will those states see an increase in safety and security, but they will also better their own relations with the U.S., which could become especially important as presidencies have proved foreign relations to be tumultuous.

Within the future, it’s foreseeable that Ghanaian and U.S. authorities will work closer to find and prosecute criminals who are operating on the internet. That partnership could also easily evolve into other partnerships or even into a cyber defense pact between West African nations and the U.S. It’s clear that these West African states want cyber criminals out of their borders, and if they work hand-in-hand with America’s technological power, then there really could be a world wherein West Africa and the U.S. begin to draw closer towards real partnership.

Coming back to class discussions, the American role as a dominant global superpower is maintained when the state makes these outreaches to foreign countries. If the U.S. is to maintain its hegemony then it must be able to do so in every new field of battle and the most rapidly growing one is the cyberspace. In the next decades, the wars that we wage will increasingly be dependent on internet infrastructure and who can best utilise these systems. Beginning key strategic partnerships like those in West Africa places the American states just one step ahead of future enemies. Cyber criminals are defeated when the world’s police departments are willing to work together.

Article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g99kp897do In a joint operation between US and Ghanaian authorities, Frederick Kumi, a social media influencer from Ghana, was arrested over allegations that he was involved in starting a romance scam that cost elderly Americans over $8m.
