Leaders pledged cooperation, but violence and human rights abuses continue to plague the country. Peace and conflict and human rights are central challenges for the world’s youngest nation as they attempt to rebuild through the violence.

According to Associated Press news, The United States, United Kingdom and Norway have contributed significantly to peace efforts. Just recently, in December of 2025, calling for the leaders of South Sudan to shift their focus from revengeful fighting to reattempt commitment and implementation of the 2018 Peace Agreement. The United States, United Kingdom and Norway all criticized South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir, for violating the power-sharing deals arranged by the peace deal. This ultimately undermines the legitimacy of state institutions. Furthermore, former opposition group leader and current vice president, Riek Machar, remains imprisoned. This has destabilized the government further, raising concerns of political repression and due process.

According to Associated Press news, the United Nations has warned that the crisis in South Sudan is likely to escalate, approaching a “breaking point”. As armed clashes continue and commitments to the peace deals fall through, a failure of peacebuilding mechanisms is reflected. Incomplete total reform leaves room for groups to still commit violence and allows them to destabilize peace agreements. This persistence of conflict also signals a breakdown in negative peace. The absence of a full scale civil war does not mean there is genuine stability or justice.

Overall, this crisis in South Sudan shows how fragile post conflict states can struggle to move towards positive peace. Structural violence must be addressed and institutions must foster legitimacy. Without commitment to the implementation of the peace deal, South Sudan is likely to fall back into a full scale civil war, worsening the humanitarian conditions and deepening the cuts into the legitimacy of the Sudanese Government.

Source: South Sudan’s peace guarantors warn against renewed violence | AP News South Sudan’s government and opposition groups have signed what they call a “final peace agreement” to end the five-year civil war that killed tens of thousands and displaced millions of civilians.
