The Zamzam displacement camp is Sudan’s largest, home to over half a million people displaced due to the Civil War. RSF raided the camp as part of its effort to siege the capital of the North Darfur region, El Fasher. According to Associated Press news, many civilians were killed in house to house executions. These acts are explicit violations of international humanitarian law and has been one of the deadliest attacks in the ongoing conflict.

The report by the United Nations Human Rights Office is a form of international whistleblowing, exposing the atrocities that could otherwise remain under the rug in the international community. By documenting and publishing data on systematic killings, torture, and sexual violence, the United Nations is publically challanging the legitimacy of the Rapid Support Forces. By deliberately targeting civilians, any claim of legitimacy by the RSF is undermined and they are instead seen as international criminals of mass human right abuses. In addition, this crisis highlights the breakdown and weakening of Sudanese Sovereignty. The state’s inability to protect its citizens from such mass atrocities is a failure to uphold the Responsibility to Protect. When state institutions are overpowered by armed rebel groups, sovereignty is weakened. The United Nations involvement shows how global governance institutions attempt to fill the vacuum left by weakened state authority.

Ultimately, RSF’s attack on the Zamzam camp highlights the fragility of Sudan’s current political landscape. The role of the United Nations is important to spread awareness on humanitarian crises, sparking opportunities for global aid and pressure.

Source: RSF killed more than 1,000 civilians in April attack on Zamzam camp, UN report says | AP News A new report from the United Nations Human Rights Office has confirmed that in April of 2025, more than 1,000 innocent civilians were killed by Sudanese Rapid Support Forces, RSF, during a three day assault on the Zamzam displacement camp.
