These talks are aimed at ending the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Group. The conflict, sparked in April of 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths, countless human rights abuses and a widespread humanitarian crisis as the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Group fight for national power.

The talks in Cairo are aimed at negotiating ceasefire terms, humanitarian aid access, disarmament and building a political plan for peace. However, past efforts in Jeddah, Geneva and other venues have seen temporary progress, with fundamental disagreements eroding diplomatic efforts at peace. Considering this, diplomats stress that while both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces have expressed a willingness to conduct dialogue, mistrust remains deeply entrenched and extremist demands are often proposed with little to no reach across the isle. This is a critical barrier preventing peace. Moving forward, I foresee that a fragile ceasefire or humanitarian truce will be reached before any sort of concrete peaceful agreement. Continued multilateral engagement will be important to maintain stability and facilitate negotiation on a neutral ground.

Source: https://apnews.com/article/sudan-peace-talks-cairo-rsf-darfur-army-777a15f219b445613d4cd265da4e2dee After nearly 3 years of brutal civil war, Sudan’s warring parties have resumed peace negotiations in Cairo with the mediation of Egypt and the United Nations.
