The drill sits on the Curad-1 Well, positioned deep in the waters of the Indian Ocean. This location was selected after years of seismic mapping done by foreign governments in partnership with Somalia, suggesting the presence of as many as 30 billion barrels’ worth of oil.

One of the partner states was Turkiye. A state-owned drillship arrived in the waters of Somalia this week to begin actively helping with the mission. In 2024, Somalia and Turkiye signed a production-sharing agreement that granted Turkish firms the right to explore and develop offshore oil drilling sites in Somali-controlled territory. The drillship is operating in ultra-deep waters and plans to drill an additional 3500m below the already 3500m deep seabed.

This action is crucial for Somalia. Around 60-70% of the country’s GDP comes from livestock agriculture, and the government has been looking to open new routes to a stronger, more prosperous economy. The establishment of an offshore oil drill could provide a new, massive stream of revenue flowing into the country, which can be used to fund previously underfunded programs such as border security. The establishment of the drill will also launch Somalia a few positions higher in the energy market of East Africa, where it previously had very little presence.

Turkiye’s role in the situation is crucial, as it is not only providing the drill rig, but also naval support and security. Turkiye’s international contribution is found in its assurance of open governance, as it is acting as an overwatch for the operation, ensuring that everything occurring is in accordance with the 2020 Petroleum Law.

For Somalia, the establishment of the offshore drilling operation would allow the country’s government more domestic and international power, which it has been severely lacking recently.

Link to article: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czrepkppnl1o Somalia’s first offshore oil drilling station is a massive pivot for the nation’s economy, as it signals a shift from decades of plans and potential action to active operations.
