They were sent to the US to face wire fraud and money laundering charges. US authorities allege the men to have ran online romance scams targeting more than 100 women in the US, this lead to a total defrauding amount of over $6.2 million USD. Statements from Hawks officials said that this was evidence of “continued cooperation between South African law enforcement agencies and international law enforcement partners in disrupting transnational organised crime.” Additionally this is not a stand alone case but is only of a web of cases involving take downs. Earlier this year we saw similar stories take place in Switzerland and Spain.

South Africa and the US worked together through interpol and extradition law to help fight crime. This, at least in my opinion, is a stark difference to the general narrative that we see with how the US has interacted with African states over the past 5 years. Another note I would like to make is from the quote of the Hawks official. He intentionally states that they have ‘disrupted’ the crime. Not stopped it or largely defeated it. But have only hindered it. This may allude to this crime network being bigger than we would normally understand.

The US, who now has the control over these suspects as they are sent back to the states for trial, will most likely continue with their course of action regarding the Black axe. We have seen this take place back in 2024 where a leader of the black axe was taken down in South Africa and was tried in New Jersey, USA. So I see no reason to believe that they would change anything about this case. South Africa will most likely seek to continue improving relations with the US through actions like this as we see the BRICS alliance slowly deteriorate. The Black hand has dealt with losses similar to this before and their web is ingrained deeply from the US to the EU to the AU, where ever they go their is a network their so there isn’t reason to believe that this is going to significantly affect them.

I can connect this to the concepts of Security and Power. Security is obvious, both states are taking action to make sure that their populations are safe. This is the first and primary responsibility of a state. Power is also rather obvious due to the fact that South African, the US, Interpol, and other states and IGOs are taking action to make sure that the black axe is put down – this is often times done with force.

Link to article:https://www.usnews.com/news/world/articles/2026-09-11/south-africa-extradites-to-us-six-suspected-members-of-black-axe-gang South Africa’s Hawks police unit extradited six Nigerian nationals, these suspects are members of the black axe transnational crime network.
