There is so little information about gender-based violence readily available, and no truly effective support system at the moment, though they are beginning to surface. One fact that I think exemplifies the attitude toward victims is the process to obtain a protection order in which the victim has to get their abuser to sign off. I believe this recent spate of killings could be the beginning of a wider crackdown, however it will be impossible without better support and report systems in South Africa.

The government of South Africa and victims and perpetrators are the main actors, however gender-based violence is something faced around the world. The UN Women address this issue and intend to support struggling states by improving the norms and attitudes around gender-based violence and funding women’s’ organizations. The South African government should implement shelters and educational programs on gender-based violence, and establish programs for men’s mental health. Some women and academic research support the idea that the severity of gender-based violence comes from the legacies of apartheid, which will take time to heal.

Concepts found in this article include global challenges, equality, power, and culture. The global issue being discussed is violence, more specifically, gender-based violence. Equality is present as men and women are not equal, which is evident as about 15 women are killed every day in South Africa according to current statistics. Women are abused and killed because of power imbalances existing in their relationships and society in general, as men feel they have the power to abuse women they have never met before. In South Africa and many places around the world, a culture of silence is too well-known. Women are encouraged to stay quiet, and the abuse never stops.

At one point the article states that the Deputy National Police Commissioner told reporters that the woman might have been killed because of a love triangle; though, I believe that is a weak claim.
