El Chapo Analysis

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman will be sentenced on June 25 and most likely sent to a maximum security prison in the U.S.. This would be the safest option due to the fact that he will not be able to escape through tunnels, as achieved before. The trial where his 10 convictions took place, New York’s eastern district, was where many other Italian mafia members were convicted as well. The US has set bribes to two former Mexican presidents as well as the current one in hopes to catch a lead on El Chapo, but all were denied. One thing that the trial did successfully, to the repeated outrage of Mexican journalists covering the trial, was bury the money trail. The guilty verdict means no more tunnels and escapes for El Chapo, leaving a sigh of relief around US boardrooms.

I always remember El Chapo being in the news and never really behind bars for an extensive period of time. US intervention is important in this case due to the extensive chase El Chapo has led and was able to escape prison. The US can prevent another escape by locking him up in a maximum security prison, therefor not risking another accident El Chapo may be hoping for.

His arrest is a monumental moment for the world’s drug problem. According to the West Point report, El Chapo’s operation is believed to have penetrated the Americas, Europe, Australia, and West Africa. El Chapo had an influence all around the world and has finally ended. The only factor that should be continuously considered is that fact that others working for El Chapo may continue his work in the far future. This factor is extremely unpredictable especially because it most likely will not take place in the US. Furthermore, I believe the world is in good spirits after the conviction of El Chapo and his reign is hopefully over with.
