Mexico cheers imminent U.S. border opening, frets over WHO vaccine rules

US and Mexican officials have verified that the border will open in early November. The US will only permit WHO (World Health Organization) authorized or US vaccines for travelers. Though this requirement might cause problems due to Mexico primarily using non-WHO approved vaccines. Throughout Mexico over 12 million people have been dosed with the sputnik (russian) vaccine and over 35 million have been dosed with the chinese vaccine. Due to the closure of the border many businesses have been impacted because of the loss of customers, especially Texas counties that border the border. The opening comes from a push by the Mexican government to Washington.

I believe that the borders should be reopened. If the borders were to open back up it would help the economy of the nation as a whole and the communities that depend on the border being open. Though with the border opening up I do agree that all people traveling should be vaccinated, but I don’t agree with the restriction on which vaccine. A covid vaccine is a covid vaccine and numerous places have said that the Russian Sputnik V vaccine is safe and effective. The government shouldn’t be regulating which vaccine a person can have to come into the country, as long as they have a vaccine that is safe and effective said person should be permitted entry.

The article connects to the class because The World Health Organization is an NGO. It is an NGO due to its non-governmental status. WHO works around the world promoting health,  especially during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The border opening would also help both countries. It would be in the US’s national interest to open the borders because with the borders open an increase in tourism would happen which would help the economy. As it is President Biden’s responsibility as head of government and Foreign Minister Ebrard of Mexico helping as well this will be a good step to making all travel into the US (as long as you are vaccinated), accessible once again.
