This article talks about how Mexico’s president has started a five day tour to four Central American countries and Cuba, stopping first in Guatemala. He has written in his Social Media accounts that the meetings with Guatemala focused on development, migration and strengthening bilateral ties. The Mexican president López Obrador hopes to help decrease the number of jobless and poor Guatemalans by extending his tree planting program to Central America. This has job opportunity as all they have to do is plant and care for trees for a monthly wage. This is to try and stop the migrants that flee up towards the Mexico border with the United States. López Obrador some would say is doing the United States dirty work by helping the border not get too crowded. He will also stop in El Salvador, Belize, Honduras and Cuba to help out with a number of different things for each one such as more migration problems, gang violence, etc.
This article is important because it shows that even though Mexico may be a larger country in Central America it still looks out for the little guy when they need to. These are friendly gestures that will help build relationships and hopefully help more countries come together. With López Obradors help the Central American countries will hopefully be more independent and functional.
This relates to what we talk about in class through the topic of borders because Mexico is between these Central American countries and the United States. They are doing this because they have a ton of migrants pass through their country all the time which they hope to limit with these diplomatic meetings.
