Suriname is considering taking in Afghan refugees that are currently in Kosovo. The US, where the refugees would have originally gone, were denied entry by the US based on the immigrants profile and failure of the US entry requirements. Suriname says they will also consider the needed financial aid, and involvement of the International Organization for Migration, but are willing to accept the refugees and that the country is working with the US on this issue.
I think that this would be good for the refugees, US, Kosovo, and Suriname if all goes well. The Afghan refugees don’t want to go back to Afghanistan, Kosovo doesn’t want the refugees to stay for much longer I’m assuming, the US doesn’t want them because they didn’t meet the necessary entry requirements and some were requested for more screening, and Suriname wants to boost it’s international reputation. I personally wouldn’t have expected Suriname to take in refugees or even be on that topic in the first place, but It’s good that the refugees aren’t pushed back to their country.
This article is related to what we’re doing in class because we talk a lot about current events, and also because Suriname and America are part of my assigned section of the world.
