Mexican president Andrés Manuel Lopéz Obrador presented a peace plan for the Ukraine War at the UN General Assembly. Obrador proposed that Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia’s Vladimir Putin come together for a series of peace talks. These peace talks would be mediated by a “mediation committee, including Pope Francis, India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, and the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The ultimate goal of these peace talks would be a truce for at least five years. However, Ukraine seemingly has already rejected these plans. One of Zelenskyy’s advisors, Mykhailo Podolyak, recently tweeted that AMLO was proposing this peace plan only for his image and that it would only give Russia time to gain strength while more and more Ukrainians are killed.

I think it’s naive for AMLO to propose something like this and expect people to believe that he’s genuine. He believes that Mexico should have a non-interventionist foreign policy, and his relations with Russia are pretty strong;  legislators in his administration created a Mexico-Russia friendship committee a month after the war in Ukraine began. In my opinion, the only reason he would propose this is so that if Russia is deemed a Pariah country, Mexico won’t receive secondary sanctions.

This connects to class because the United Nations is the largest IGO in the world, and this occurred at the United Nations General Assembly.
